Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Just got back from watching Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I’m a little conflicted, I liked the movie and a lot of things were done right but at the same time there are too many flaws to ignore, it could have been so much better. Firstly the things I liked. Everything that had to do with the Apes was great, I like how the film showed how they interacted with one another and how they built their own little ape civilization. I also really liked the portrayal of earth after an apocalyptic event, I thought it was a pretty accurate representation of what would happen if humanity suffered through a major epidemic like in the movie. The action sequences and fights were well made, but it was mostly CGI. For the most part I liked the actors, but really all the human characters where mostly secondary in the movie, it was mainly about the apes, and even though I really liked the scenes with the apes I feel like there was a lot more they could have done with the human survivors. The filmmakers chose to focus more on the Apes and less on how humanity was dealing with the situation at hand. Now on to the stuff I didn’t like about the movie. The dialogue was kind of cheesy and not very creative honestly. What was worse though was that the movie was completely predictable. There was absolutely nothing that I didn’t see coming, every plot point you could see coming from a mile away. Right from the start you can already tell who is good and who is bad and who is going to do what. Don’t get me wrong I was entertained, but I liked to be surprised every now and then too. The best thing about the movie is most definitely Maurice, you’ll know him when you see him. Overall I think this was an average movie that could have been a lot better. 3/5
