Insterstellar (11/10/14)

4.5 Interstellar

Just got back from watching Interstellar and it lived up to the hype. It really is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. It is creative, imaginative and like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Like most Christopher Nolan movies it has a pretty complex plot filled with twists and turns and callbacks. It is a weird roller coaster journey and it has its fair share of emotional moments, a large part of the plot centers around the bond between a father and his daughter and I’m always a sucker for parent/child drama. Matthew McConaughey was excellent as usual. Most of the cast was great as well, there was even an unexpected appearance by a pretty famous actor towards the end of the film. Overall there are a few little things that I would change about the movie, but in the end, it was creative, unique and most of all entertaining so I would recommend that anyone who is interested in space travel, astrophysics, or just plain old great stories to go see this movie. 4.5/5

Fury (11/3/14)

4 Fury

I went to the movies this past weekend and I saw Fury starring Brad Pitt. The film is a very gritty and somewhat dark story that follows a group of American soldiers and the tank they operate as they move across Nazi Germany towards the end of WWII. The film is beautifully shot and edited. The entire cast delivers excellent performances that truly make you see what the horrors of war are really like. No one actor stands above the rest and they all do an amazing job at showing the bond that all the soldiers in the tank share with one another. The best parts of the movie have to be the fighting scenes, this may be the most realistic WWII movie as far as what the battles where actually like. You can see and hear every shot being fired and every explosion that goes off in the background. Another thing that I liked about the film is that it has no end goal or main mission it just follows a tank and its soldiers through one day in the hell that is war. There are horribly graphic scenes throughout the movie that do a good job in showing just how terrible war really is. There are a good amount of emotional heart wrenching scenes especially towards the end of the movie that the actors involved really nail. There are a few questionable decisions that the characters make in the movie but I give them a pass seeing as how the rest of the movie is so well made. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the film, but I would have to put it in the same category as 12 Years a Slave or Schindler’s List in that while they are all excellent movies that need to be seen, they are all hard to watch because of the subject matter that they deal with. In the end if you haven’t seen Fury I would recommend that you watch it, but if you’re like me and have already seen it then you probably won’t want to watch it again any times soon. 4/5

John Wick (10/27/14)

4 John Wick

The second movie I saw this weekend was John Wick with Keanu Reeves and I really really liked it. It’s a great revenge tale, there isn’t much dialogue and the acting isn’t anything to write home about, but if there is one thing that this movie does right it’s the action. John Wick had some of the best fight scenes I’ve ever seen, they were expertly choreographed and shot. The film is non-stop action for the majority of the story and it is really fast paced. Another thing I liked about the movie is the fact that it’s set in a world where every character seems to know something you don’t, which I always enjoy. Keanu’s character is the ultimate badass, he doesn’t say much because he doesn’t have to, he talks with his weapons, and to say the he kicks ass would be putting it lightly. The one thing that I really didn’t like about the movie was the weird style of subtitles that they used. There’s a good amount of dialogue in Russian but for some reason whoever designed the subtitles would emphasize certain words with color which to me just looked weird. The best thing about the movie by far though is the puppy. If you see the movie you’ll know what I’m talking about. Overall, I thought it was a fantastic action movie that did everything it was supposed to do, I was thoroughly entertained. 4/5

Dracula Untold (10/27/14)

3 Dracula Untold

I watched a couple movies in theaters this weekend, the first one I saw was Dracula Untold, it didn’t quite live up to expectations but I still think it was a good movie. The things I didn’t like about it were the fact that the dialogue and the acting were too cheesy (although this is an action movie after-all) for my liking, but it wasn’t bad enough to the point where I couldn’t enjoy the movie. The best thing about the movie is definitely all the action sequences and battle scenes, the protagonist (Vlad the Impaler/Dracula) is a legit badass, and I like how the film’s hero is not perfect and has to make some pretty difficult decisions throughout the movie. The story just seemed to move along nothing was really surprising, but I still enjoyed the movie. I think it’s a pretty good blend of historical fiction and fantasy. Overall I’d recommend watching the movie if you’re into the supernatural or if you just like big, dumb, badass movies. 3/5

Gone Girl (10/11/14)

4 Gone Girl

For the first time in a while I went to the movies today and I saw Gone Girl. Right off the bat I have to say that this is a pretty unique movie. I know it’s based off of a book but the story feels very original and unlike most other movies out there right now. The film is a great mystery/thriller that keeps you guessing who did what throughout the entire movie. The performances were great, Ben Affleck did a good job especially with all small things like subtle facial expressions and whatnot. The movie is a bit long at 2hr 26min and honestly the first half of the movie is much better than the second. Although the film did keep me on my toes I was able to guess some of the bigger plot twists before they happened which is always kind of frustrating. I also wasn’t completely satisfied with the way things ended, but nevertheless overall it was a very good movie. I would recommend watching it. 4/5

Hercules (8/9/14)

3.5 Hercules

Watched Hercules today and I have to say it was better than I expected. I was pleasantly surprised by the story which follows closely to the Greek myth of Hercules while also adding a few things of its own. All the action and fighting scenes were great. The Rock is a bonafide action star, and he fits the role of the muscle bound protagonist perfectly. The supporting cast is ok, I found it funny that all the characters talk in a British accent except the Rock for some reason. The dialogue is a bit cheesy but I didn’t go to see the movie to watch people talk, I went to see big dudes with weapons do baddass things. There were a couple of plot twists in the film that surprised me, which I see as a good thing. I always like it when I can’t predict what will happen next in a movie and there were definitely a few things that I didn’t see coming. The ending itself is a bit predictable but what matters more is what happens along the way. Overall the movie was not too long, it had great action, and it was entertaining so I would recommend it. 3.5/5

A Most Wanted Man (8/6/14)

3.5 A Most Wanted Man

Just got back from watching A Most Wanted Man, one of the last movies that Philip Seymor Hoffman was in before he passed away. It’s a very realistic film that deals a lot with espionage and counter terrorism in a post 9/11 world. The movie is slow paced and very subtle but it does the job it’s meant to do. There aren’t any big car chases or crazy action sequences, most of the time it’s just characters talking to one and other. The film is an espionage-thriller and it does a good job in creating suspenseful situations. Phil Seymour Hoffman was amazing as always, he really does become his character. Rachel McAdams was ok, it did bother me though that her German accent would change throughout the film. Another thing that I didn’t like is that there were no subtitles even though there are several conversations in Arabic throughout the film. The ending of the movie was a bit unsatisfying but that’s what you can expect from a movie as realistic as this one, after all real life is rarely as satisfying as fiction. Overall the movie is nothing spectacular but it’s worth watching just for Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you like thrillers and espionage films like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy you’ll like this one. 3.5/5

Guardians of the Galaxy (8/5/14)

5 Guardians of the Galaxy

Watched Guardians of the Galaxy today and it was fucking amazing. I’ll admit I was really looking forward to watching this movie, and I had some pretty high expectations, and it did not disappoint at all. It’s without a doubt my favorite movie of the year and it’s already one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s a perfect blend of action, comedy and drama. This movie will make you laugh, it’ll make you tear up, and it’ll have you on the edge of your seat the entire time. It’s even better than the Avengers and that’s saying something. The whole cast is awesome. Every single one of the 5 main characters is special and loveable in their own way. Zoe Saldana was great and so was Dave Bautista (who honestly surprised me with his comedic chops). Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel nailed their voice overs, they made the characters come to life. I was already a huge Chris Pratt fan because of Parks and Rec, but after this he’s probably now my favorite actor. There isn’t a single wasted scene in the movie, everything has its purpose and every line of dialogue is spot on. You don’t even have to be a fan of the comic books to enjoy this movie (I knew very little about them going in and I still loved it). I can’t say enough good things about it. Honestly the only thing I didn’t like is that it had to end, it was that good. I honestly can’t recommend this film enough, this is the type of movie that everyone can enjoy regardless of age or gender. I loved it so much I’ll probably go watch it in theaters again soon. If you haven’t already done so, go see it! 5/5

Lucy (8/5/14)

3.5 Lucy

I watched Lucy today and I have to say, even though it’s not the best movie out there right now, I still very much enjoyed it. The film deals with a lot of interesting subjects and themes regarding the brain and human being’s potential. It poses a lot of questions regarding what we would be able to do if we increased our brains capacity, which I find fascinating. The movie uses a lot of footage of wild animals especially when talking about human evolution which I thought was very clever. It’s an action movie after all so of course all the action scenes and stunts were really well made. There is one chase scene in particular that comes to mind. The movie deals with a super powered character so it’s fun to see how they show the powers on screen. There isn’t much to say about Scarlett Johansson’s performance, during most of the movie she talks in a monotone voice and shows no emotion so there isn’t really that much to analyze. One thing I didn’t like about the movie though was the lack of a credible antagonist. It’s hard to take the villains seriously when they don’t really pose a threat to the protagonist. The climax of the movie isn’t very suspenseful because deep down you already know what is going to happen. There are more than a few plot holes and the dialogue is nothing to write home about but let’s be honest, this is not an award winning film or anything of the sort. It is however a creative, somewhat unique and entertaining movie, so I would recommend it. 3.5/5

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

3 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Just got back from watching Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I’m a little conflicted, I liked the movie and a lot of things were done right but at the same time there are too many flaws to ignore, it could have been so much better. Firstly the things I liked. Everything that had to do with the Apes was great, I like how the film showed how they interacted with one another and how they built their own little ape civilization. I also really liked the portrayal of earth after an apocalyptic event, I thought it was a pretty accurate representation of what would happen if humanity suffered through a major epidemic like in the movie. The action sequences and fights were well made, but it was mostly CGI. For the most part I liked the actors, but really all the human characters where mostly secondary in the movie, it was mainly about the apes, and even though I really liked the scenes with the apes I feel like there was a lot more they could have done with the human survivors. The filmmakers chose to focus more on the Apes and less on how humanity was dealing with the situation at hand. Now on to the stuff I didn’t like about the movie. The dialogue was kind of cheesy and not very creative honestly. What was worse though was that the movie was completely predictable. There was absolutely nothing that I didn’t see coming, every plot point you could see coming from a mile away. Right from the start you can already tell who is good and who is bad and who is going to do what. Don’t get me wrong I was entertained, but I liked to be surprised every now and then too. The best thing about the movie is most definitely Maurice, you’ll know him when you see him. Overall I think this was an average movie that could have been a lot better. 3/5
